ABOUT CHILD ANXIETY

Anxiety in children is common and very treatable.

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health challenges in children and adolescents. Research suggests that nearly 1 in 3 children will experience a clinically significant anxiety disorder before adulthood. The encouraging part: with the right support, children often make meaningful and lasting progress.

At The LEAP Clinic, our therapists specialize in childhood anxiety across all its forms including separation anxiety, school refusal, social anxiety, generalized worry, and specific phobias. We serve families throughout Lower Gwynedd and surrounding communities, including Ambler, Blue Bell, Lansdale, Horsham, and the greater Montgomery County area, as well as families across Pennsylvania through telehealth.

Our work is grounded in evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which is widely supported for treating childhood anxiety. At the same time, we take an integrative approach and draw from a range of therapeutic models depending on the child’s needs. This may include psychodynamic and relational approaches that help us better understand a child’s emotional world, patterns in relationships, and underlying experiences that may be contributing to anxiety. We tailor treatment to each child rather than relying on a single method or structured protocol.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

How do I know if my child has anxiety?

Childhood anxiety doesn't always look like worry. It often shows up as avoidance, physical complaints, or behavior that can be mistaken for defiance or attention-seeking. Common signs that a child may benefit from anxiety therapy include:

Excessive worry about school, friendships, or family even when things are going fine

Frequent stomachaches, headaches, or nausea, especially before school or social events

Difficulty sleeping, nightmares, or resistance to sleeping alone

Avoiding activities, friends, or places they used to enjoy

Clinginess or intense distress about being away from parents

Frequent reassurance-seeking and "what if" questions

Meltdowns or emotional outbursts that feel out of proportion to the situation

School refusal or frequent absences due to anxiety-related complaints

Perfectionism, fear of making mistakes, or intense distress about performance

If several of these signs sound familiar, a consultation with one of our clinicians can help clarify what your child is experiencing and what kind of support would help most.
